Job description

As a DevOps engineer you are keen to automate and unify processes. You have a drive to improve and speed up tasks, developer workflows and build or implement the right tools to reduce any complexity. You are part of a culture where the world of System Engineering and Software Development come together and want to bring its philosophy and practices forward. You work in a big gray area that is in between and touches every part of the system. From system administration and networking to deployment lifecycle, to security and patch management. Closing the gap between these worlds in an agile environment.

What can you expect from us?

  • An informal, international and playful work environment with self-organised, multi-disciplinary agile/lean teams

  • Managers and teammates who are invested in your growth as a technologist and as a person

  • Learn and work with cool modern technologies such as Google Cloud Platform, Kubernetes, Scala, Elasticsearch, Apache Kafka, Cassandra, Hashicorp stack, Node.js, React, Swift, Play and more

  • Access to tools and resources to do your job (best-in-class laptop, IDEs, Safari Online subscription, conferences and meetups, all the coffee and soda you can drink, and much more)

  • Ability to join and participate in multiple internal interest groups in Marktplaats and across eCG in trending topics like DevOps, BigData, Mobile Development, and others

  • Continuous Deployment through multiple environments to get rapid feedback about your work

  • Challenging big-scale projects

What do we expect from you?

  • We are looking for DevOps engineers with a passion for open source products and systems automation.

  • Desire and passion to learn new technologies, methodologies and challenging yourself

  • Motivation to work on the evolutionary path of the platform and application (e.g. public cloud challenges, researching and implementing new technologies)

  • Participate in the on-call rotation, system operations/administrations and workflow. Recommend and implement tuning, scaling and preventive solutions.

  • Manage the provisioning and operations of our infrastructure and developer environments. Most of our applications are on private cloud (built upon OpenStack), and GCP.

  • Build and own the software tools, and develop practices to focus on automation across provisioning, integration, and deployment, focusing on self service.

  • Own the instrumentation of common libraries which enable Product Development to work with our infrastructure.

  • Collaborate with SRE engineers to make monitoring and alerting solutions respond to patterns, and not on outages. Find issues before our customers or stakeholders do.

  • Document every action so your findings turn into repeatable actions–and then into automation.

  • Install, manage and maintain large distributed database clusters, like MySQL and Cassandra, and large scale ElasticSearch and Kafka clusters for our search and logging needs.

  • Debug production issues across multiple systems and various levels of the stack

  • Work on the growth of our infrastructure and automation across the board

You have

  • A programming/development background and/or operational experience in system engineering. Or the motivation to learn and grow in these fields

  • Starting experience or interest to learn in managing, maintaining, and automating infrastructure and tooling

  • Basic experience in managing and maintaining Linux systems.

  • Basic experience in scripting languages (e.g. Python) or programming languages (e.g. Golang, Scala, Java)

  • Basic experience or interest to learn automating the integration and deployment of software (e.g. Jenkins)

  • Basic experience or interest to learn using logging and monitoring tools to improve observability across systems (e.g.(Grafana, Kibana, Prometheus, Metric Tank)

  • Basic experience or interest to learn working with Terraform or other configuration management systems.

  • Basic experience or interest to learn working with Databases (e.g. MySQL / Cassandra/ CRDB) and Middleware Infrastructure.

  • Flexibility to participate in on-call shifts

  • Basic experience troubleshooting and tuning JVM-based server applications.

  • Basic knowledge of the TCP/IP stack, internet routing and load balancing.

Skills: Analytical thinking. Able to identify and drive improvements to make the system more fault-tolerant and better scalable, and work cross-functionally to implement those improvements.

Knowledge: You can practice sustainable incident response handling, and have the ability and desire to debug, and optimize code, and automate routine tasks.

Mentality: You are a team-player who is open to feedback. Interested or have the agility to work in a fast paced environment, make quick informed decisions, take ownership, and handle pressure.

What do we offer?

  • Meaningful Work: We are a diverse, international, highly skilled and passionate team committed to a world where people share more and waste less. Every day you will have the opportunity to make a huge difference for our users, customers as well as shape the future.

  • Flexibility: We believe that work is what you do, not where you do it. So we provide mobile work and flexible hours that gives you the autonomy, and scope to set your own working patterns and agendas. We empower our teams and people to decide which key moments they want to spend face to face, instead of fixing a number of office days.

  • Work-Life Balance: Our people really do come first and we have lots of options for greater work-life balance including part-time work, and additional three months fully-paid parental leave time.

  • Growth and Development: We are a global organisation who truly believes in growing our people. To support this we offer lots of development and training opportunities and provide a budget for our team members.

  • Competitive Compensation: We know that our people are the key to our success and our compensation packages reflect this.

  • Connection and Inclusion: Our culture is the glue that holds us together. We believe in making meaningful connections and creating an inclusive atmosphere with lots of opportunities to connect both in your day to day work and through social team activities (online and offline).

Benefits are an essential part of your total compensation for the work you do every day. Whether you’re single, in a growing family, or nearing retirement, Adevinta* offers a variety of comprehensive and competitive benefit programs to meet your needs.

People are the heart of Adevinta*, and their health and well-being are our first priority. We continue to monitor local government guidance and partner closely with medical advisors to determine the safest and best next steps for everyone. We will discuss the particular case for your region during the interview process. As a general rule, interviews will be completed remotely over video calls.
